Calling All Wine Corks!

Inventory Clearance Sale
These three little words mean big savings for you because beginning on Thursday, August 27, through Saturday, August 29, The Savvy Wine Cellar is having its very first Semi-Annual Inventory Clearance Sale! In order for us to stock our shelves with the terrific new wines we have waiting in our storeroom we need to clear out a lot of bottles currently on our shelves.  We decided the best way to do it was to throw you folks a party and call it an "Inventory Clearance Sale."

Shop in our store Thursday, Friday and Saturday and find lots of marked-down items just waiting to go home with you. You still get to take advantage of our 5% discount on six bottles (and take home our new reusable bag) and 10% on 12 bottles.  It's a win-win situation... You can get many of your favorites at a big savings; we will have room to put some great new wines on our shelves for you!

This Week at the Tasting Bar: A New Wrinkle for this Week Only
If you've been coming to our weekly tastings you already know that The Tasting Bar menu for Thursday nights and Saturday afternoons features the same wines.  It's worked out really well for us and we don't have any plans to change things...except for this week...and it all has to do with the New York State Fair. To celebrate the first day of this year's fair we've asked Chris Reneau of Chateau Lafayette Reneau Winery (Seneca Lake) to be our guest pourer on Thursday night, August 27, from 5-8 p.m.  He will be pouring five beautiful wines from their internationally acclaimed winery.  Here they are:

Chateau Lafayette Reneau Semi-Dry Riesling, 2007
Chateau Lafayette Reneau Dry Riesling, 2007
Chateau Lafayette Reneau Chardonnay (Barrel Fermented), 2005
Chateau Lafayette Reneau Pinot Noir Blanc, 2007
Chateau Lafayette Reneau Cabernet Franc, NV

Saturday, August 29, at The Tasting Bar-Teacher's Pet Wines
Like it, or not, or like it a lot it's that time of year again.  Yes, we all know that as soon as the New York State Fair ends, the school year begins anew.  In fact, this year some schools are returning even before Labor Day.  And many college students and faculty have already returned to their campuses and teaching assignments.  Instead of lazy days at the beach, on the golf course or in the pool, everyone will begin to focus on school, grades and scores.  Because we're empty nesters with grown children we were feeling a little left out of this whole school and grades thing. So we decided that this Saturday at The Tasting Bar we would feature wines that get Great Scores and are Great Values.  You won't want to miss a sip of any of these high-achievers as they are great-tasting wines with solid scores from Wine Advocate, Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast as as being great values.   Don't play hooky on us!  Drop by The Tasting Bar on Saturday, August 29, from 1-5 p.m. and check out our Teacher's Pet Wines.  Here's the list:

Willamette Valley Pinot Gris, 2007, Oregon (Willamette)-90 Points Wine Enthusiast
Waterbrook Chardonnay, 2007, Washington State (Columbia Valley)-88 Points Wine Spectator
Chateau D'Aqueria Tavel Rosé, 2006, France (Rhone)-88 Points Wine Spectator
Hacienda Molleda Garnacha, 2006, Spain (Carinena)-91 Points Wine Advocate
Pascual Toso Malbec, 2007, Argentina (Mendoza)-89 Points Wine Advocate

"Pick of the Week"
In keeping with our New York State Fair theme, this week's pick is a terrific Finger Lakes Chardonnay.  It's Heron Hill Ingle Vineyard Unoaked Chardonnay.  Sustainable farming was used in growing the grapes, which were selected from the Ingle Vineyard plot named "Carl's."  There are great aromas of lemongrass and green apple skins and the wine has terrific balance and a lovely finish. Stop in and try some Thursday-Saturday.

Savvy Cooking
This week's Savvy Cooking recipe comes to you from our son-in-law, Andy Hayes.  Andy's a middle school science teacher in Boston but he has a passion for cooking and is great at it.  Part of the fun of visiting him and our daughter and grandson in Boston is sampling his cooking.  One of Andy's cooking specialties is baby back ribs.  Everyone in our family loves them.  You can just see the meat coming off the bone when it's sitting on your plate.  And the flavors are amazing! Since summer, picnics and bar-b-ques are coming to an end, we thought we'd send it off to you as an End-of-Summer-Cooking Blast.  Enjoy!

And here are three wines to choose from that we think will pair quite nicely with this recipe:
Finca El Origen Reserva Malbec 2007, Argentina, $11.99/bottle
Cline Zinfandel, 2007, California, $12.49/bottle
Brujeria Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Tempranillo blend, 2007, Australia, $15.99/bottle

How Savvy Are You?
Are you keeping track of your answers?  How savvy are you becoming?  Maybe you are more savvy than we are!  Good for you!

What is Austria's national grape (white)?  Answer:  Grüner Veltliner

You are in a restaurant and ask to see a wine list.  Your server asks if you would like the "sommelier" to help you select a wine.  What/who is a sommelier?  Answer:  A sommelier is a certified wine steward who has attended the International Sommelier Guild and has earned and received a degree.

What wine pairs best with foi gras?  Answer:  Since foie gras is rich and very fatty, the classic wine pairing has always been Sauternes because of their sweet, rich taste.

12% Tuesday
The 12% discounted selection for Tuesday, September 1, is.....EVERY WINE IN THE SHOP.  That's right, we're going to give a 12% discount to everything because it's the first day of September and call it a Last Blast of Summer 12% Tuesday.  But you'd better get here early and stock up because once we close our doors at 7 p.m. the 12% discount goes away. And remember, the 12% discount does not apply to wines already on sale and cannot be combined with any other discount. (It's still a great deal!)
