Calling All Wine Corks!

This Week at the Tasting Bar
Playing at the movies right now is a film called Julie & Julia. The film is based on two best-selling memoirs: Julie Powell's Julie & Julia and My Life in France, by Julia Child with Alex Prud'homme.  The film details how the lives of Julie and Julia, even though they are separated by time and distance, are intertwined.  Food lovers, aspiring chefs and anyone who is at a crossroads in life will appreciate this movie.  Bottle Shock is a film based, very loosely, on the famous 1976 blind tasting in Paris in which two California wines came out on top. With that in mind we're going to be tasting wines from France and California as our little homage to these two movies.  We hope you'll join us on Thursday from 5-8 p.m. or Saturday from 1-5 p.m.  (We'll bring the popcorn!)  Here's what we'll be pouring:

Dry Creek Chenin Blanc, 2007, California (Clarksburg)
Noel Bougrier Vouvray, 2007, France (Loire Valley)
Buehler Vineyards Russian River Chardonnay, 2007, California (Sonoma)
Folie À Deux Ménage à Trois (Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon blend), 2008. California
Juveniles Crozes-Hermitage Syrah, 2007, France (Rhone Valley)

Pick of the Week

This week it's a Savvy Wine Cellar favorite, Lyeth Estate L de Lyeth Merlot.  We like the aromas of mint and spices on the nose and the way it feels on the first sip. This California Merlot is ripe with black cherries, raspberry, plum and currants.  Enjoy this wine with some cheddar cheese while you're relaxing on the deck or pair it with beef or pasta for dinner.  Any way you sip it, you're sure to love it. And with a Special Pick of the Week price of $11.69/bottle you just can't go wrong! Make suer you try a taste when you're in the shop this weekend.

Savvy Cooking
Everyone loves tacos, right?  We've tried them made with ground beef, ground turkey and ground chicken.  But when we discovered fish tacos we knew we'd found a winner.  Here's a link to a really tasty fish taco recipe from Foodandwine.com that we tried and loved.  Let us know how you like it.

Food and Wine recommended a crisp California Chardonnay with this recipe.  We like that idea but also have a couple of others for you to choose from.  Here they are:

Cupcake Vineyards Chardonnay, from California's Central Coast
Gallo Family Sonoma County Reserve Pinot Gris, from Sonoma, California
Castro Baroña Albariño from Spain

How Savvy Are You?
Are you keeping track of your answers?  How savvy are you becoming?  Maybe you are more savvy than we are!  Good for you!

Are Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris the same? Answer:  Yes, they are actually the same.  "Pinot Grigio" is from Italy and "Pinot Gris" is from France.

What is a Champagne blanc de noirs ?  Answer:  Blanc de noirs (translation:  white from blacks) means that the Champagne was made from red grapes, such as Pinot Noir.

What's a "vertical" wine tasting?  Answer:  If you are participating in a "vertical" wine tasting, you are sampling wines of the same type that are from the same producer but are different vintage years.
