Calling All Wine Corks!

This week we're going to be spending a lot of time in Italy...well, sort of.  On Wednesday evening we'll be exploring Tuscany with John Racciatti of Winebow Wines and learning about the beautiful wines of this famous Italian region.  We love these Tuscan wines and want to make sure that everyone has a chance to taste them.  So, if you can't "join us in Tuscany" on Wednesday, don't worry. Why? Because this week at The Tasting Bar, we'll be sampling five wines from this region. If you want to join us on our Italian journey, make sure you stop in Thursday and Friday from 5-8 and Saturday from 1-5 p.m. Here's what we'll be pouring:

"Pick of the Week"
Continuing on our Italian journey, Allison decided to travel to Sicily for her pick of the week.   It's a delicious white blend...Regaleali Bianco Tasca D'Almerita. Regaleali Bianco is the first wine produced by Count Tasca d'Almerita on the Regaleali Estate. A blend of three Sicilian grapes-Inzolia, Catarratto and Grecanico-this is a versatile, refreshing, and delicious white wine. Cold fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks at 63°F for 15 days. The wine is then refined for three months in stainless steel tanks, and in the bottle for one month before release. Make sure you taste a bit of it Thursday-Sunday when you're in the shop and you'll see why Allison likes it so much!  Regularly priced at $12.99, it is ON SALE this week for $10.99/bottle.

How Savvy Are You?
Are you keeping track of your answers?  How savvy are you becoming?  Maybe you are more savvy than we are!  Good for you!

What is malolactic fermentationAnswer:  Malolactic fermentation is a secondary fermentation that converts malic acid into lactic acid, carbon dioxide, and diacetyl through the introduction of bacteria.  If you like your Chardonnay nice and buttery, chances are the wine went through this secondary fermentation.

You're drinking a white wine that has a definite smell of cat pee.  What are you probably drinkingAnswer:  Most likely you are enjoying a Sauvignon Blanc.  The distinctive ammonia-like smell is sometimes one of the characteristics of Sauvignon Blanc grown in the Loire region of France.  Sauvignon Blanc is also produced in California and New Zealand and in other regions.  By the way, the ammonia aroma isn't considered a bad thing in the wine unless it is overwhelming.  Meow!

What should a wine steward or waiter always do when they present you with the bottle of wine you've selected?  Answer:  They should recite the "Three Vs," which are: Vintage:  The year that the grapes were harvested; Varietal: The type of grape; Vintner: The winery that made the wine.

12% Tuesday
The 12% discounted selection for Tuesday, September 22, is Chardonnay from California. Whether you like them big, buttery and full of oak, or you prefer them a little more fruit forward, next Tuesday is your day to stock up on them because our California Chardonnays will be discounted 12% at the cash register. Don't wait or you'll miss it! (12% discount does not apply to sale wines or End of Bin Specials.)

Etc., Etc.
