Calling All Wine Corks!

Okay folks, it's time to get serious here.  You've enjoyed the Fair for two weeks, the kids are now back in school, and we have some great wines for you.  Are you finding that you have a little extra time to have some fun and enjoy yourself?  The Savvy Wine Cellar wants to help.  That's why we are very serious about the "killer" wines we're tasting this week on Thursday and Saturday at The Tasting Bar. We've found four brand-new-to-the-shop wines  and one customer favorite that are sure to fit in with any leisure time activity you'd like to match them with.  Want to try some new recipes now that the kids are gone?  Well any of the five wines we're tasting will match with many types of cuisines, whether it's something new or one of your tried and true recipes.  But, you must get in here on Thursday AND Friday from 5-8 or Saturday from
1-5 p.m. to sample them.  Here they are:

This Week at the Tasting Bar

Barker's Marque Arona Sauvignon Blanc, 2008, New Zealand
Matchbook Old Head Chardonnay, 2007, California
Vitiano Falesco Rosso, 2007, Italy
Hanging Vine Pinot Noir Parcel 22, 2008, California

"Pick of the Week"
Dale's pick for this week is the Argillae Orvieto Classico, 2007 vintage, from the Umbria region of Italy.  Orvieto is one of Umbria-and Italy's-most famous wines and it scored 88 Points from Wine Spectator.  The grapes are carefully selected in the vineyard, pressed delicately and the resulting juice is racked and vinified in stainless steel at controlled temperatures of 59-62°F.  This delicious white wine offers flavors of apple, pear and a hint of lavender on the nose. It is medium-bodied, with good intensity and balance and a crisp, dry finish, leaving a delicious, spicy taste on your palate.  Make sure you taste a sip Thursday, Friday or Saturday when you're in the shop.

Savvy Cooking
This week we have a fast and easy recipe that can be made for a quick school-night dinner; or, you can make it and take it to a tailgate party; or you can serve it to friends and family when you're watching the big game this week on television.  It's Grilled Skirt Steak and Pepper Sandwiches with Corn Mayonnaise and comes to us from Bon Appétitmagazine via Epicurious.com.  Just click on this link.

And here are the wines we recommend to enjoy with this meal:
Red Mudd Cabernet Sauvignon, 2004, Australia.  Gets 88 points from Wine Spectator. $14.99/bottle
Bogle Merlot, 2006, California.  Gets Four Corks from The Savvy Wine Cellar.  $11.99/bottle
Disceño Malbec, 2007, Argentina.  Another Four Cork wine from us.  $12.99/bottle

How Savvy Are You?
Are you keeping track of your answers?  How savvy are you becoming?  Maybe you are more savvy than we are!  Good for you!

What is ArmagnacAnswer:  Armagnac is a brandy that is made in the Armagnac region of France.

What is a "blind" wine tastingAnswer: The object of a "blind" wine tasting is to guess who the producer of the wine is.  You probably would be told what the varietal is that you are tasting and, sometimes, the vintage year.

What is IcewineAnswer:  Icewine (Eiswein) is a type of wine made from frozen grapes.  The grapes are left on the vine to freeze.  But since the sugars in the grapes don't freeze, and the water does, the juice from them is very concentrated and very sweet...and usually pretty pricey.

12% Tuesday
The 12% discounted selection for Tuesday, September 15, is Pinot Noir.  We have several new Pinot Noirs in the shop that we're really enjoying at our house and we think you might like them, too.  So drop in between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15, and get some. (12% discount does not apply to sale wines.)
